What Is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription weight loss medication that has rapidly become one of the most effective treatments available for obesity and weight management. It works by mimicking two gut hormones, GLP 1 and GIP, which regulate appetite, blood sugar, and metabolism. The result is a significant reduction in hunger and food intake, leading to substantial weight loss when combined with dietary and lifestyle changes.
How Does Mounjaro Work?
Tirzepatide acts on receptors in the brain that control appetite and satiety. After injection, most patients notice a marked reduction in hunger within the first few days. Food cravings diminish, portion sizes naturally decrease, and the constant background thinking about food that many patients describe begins to fade.
The medication is administered as a once weekly subcutaneous injection using a pre filled pen. The starting dose is 2.5mg for the first four weeks, increasing to 5mg, then 7.5mg, and potentially higher doses depending on your response and tolerance. Each dose increase is made gradually to minimise side effects.
What Results Can I Expect?
Clinical trials have shown average weight loss of 15 to 22% of body weight over 72 weeks. In clinical practice, patients typically begin to see meaningful results within the first month on the 5mg dose. The rate of weight loss varies, but a loss of one to two kilograms per week during the active treatment phase is common.
At our clinic, we see patients who have been unable to lose weight through diet and exercise alone finally making sustained progress. For many, reaching their target weight is a realistic and achievable goal with the right support.
Side Effects and Safety
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, reduced appetite (which is part of the intended effect), and occasional constipation or diarrhoea. These are usually mild and tend to improve after the first few weeks on each new dose.
More significant side effects are uncommon but can include vomiting, abdominal pain, and, rarely, pancreatitis. Patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 should not use tirzepatide. We conduct a thorough medical review before prescribing to ensure the medication is safe for you.
How Much Does Mounjaro Cost Privately?
Mounjaro is currently available in the UK primarily through private clinics and pharmacies. The cost varies by dose. At Clinique Alpa, we offer competitive pricing and can discuss payment options during your consultation. The investment includes the medication itself, the initial medical assessment, injection equipment, and ongoing clinical support.
What Happens During a Weight Loss Consultation?
Your first appointment includes a full medical history and review of any previous weight loss attempts, measurement of weight, height, BMI, and relevant vital signs, a discussion of your target weight and realistic expectations, screening for contraindications and interactions with existing medications, and, if appropriate, a prescription with instruction on self injection technique.
We provide the injection pen, needles, and a demonstration at your first visit. Most patients are confident to self inject by the end of the appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get Mounjaro on the NHS?
Tirzepatide has received NICE approval for weight management in certain clinical criteria, but NHS availability remains limited due to cost and commissioning decisions. Most patients in the UK currently access Mounjaro through private prescription.
How long do I need to take it?
Treatment duration is individualised. Most patients take Mounjaro for six to twelve months to reach their target weight, with a gradual tapering plan afterwards. Some patients continue on a maintenance dose long term.
Will I regain the weight when I stop?
Weight regain is possible if the underlying dietary and lifestyle factors are not addressed. We provide ongoing support and advice to help maintain your results after treatment ends.
Is it safe with diabetes?
Tirzepatide was originally developed for type 2 diabetes and is highly effective at improving blood sugar control. If you have diabetes, your existing medications may need adjusting during treatment, which we monitor closely.
