Medical Reports for Home Office and Immigration Applications

What Is an Immigration Medical Report?

An immigration medical report is a detailed clinical document prepared by a registered medical practitioner to support a Home Office or visa application. These reports are used in asylum claims, human rights applications, deportation appeals, and applications for leave to remain. The purpose is to provide an independent medical opinion on how a person’s physical or mental health would be affected by the outcome of their case.

When Is a Medical Report Needed?

Solicitors and legal representatives request medical reports in a range of immigration contexts. The most common scenarios include asylum seekers who have experienced trauma and need documentation of the psychological impact, applicants with physical or mental health conditions that would worsen if they were returned to their country of origin, individuals whose children have health or educational needs that can only be met in the UK, and cases where the applicant’s medical treatment is ongoing and would be disrupted by removal.

The report must be authored by a doctor who is registered with the General Medical Council and has relevant clinical experience. It must present an objective, evidence based assessment rather than an advocacy document.

What Does the Assessment Involve?

At Clinique Alpa, a typical immigration medical assessment consists of several sessions, often three to four, each lasting 30 to 60 minutes. The process includes a full medical history covering physical health, mental health, and any past trauma; a clinical examination where relevant; a review of existing medical records, hospital letters, and investigation results; and assessment of current mental state, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress, and functional impairment.

For patients who do not speak English, we conduct assessments with a qualified interpreter present. This is essential for accuracy and is standard practice in medico legal work.

What the Report Covers

A comprehensive immigration medical report typically addresses the presenting complaints and current symptoms, relevant medical history and treatment, the clinical findings on examination, a diagnosis using recognised classification systems, the impact of the condition on daily functioning and quality of life, the likely prognosis with and without continued treatment in the UK, the availability and standard of treatment in the country of origin (where relevant), and an opinion on the medical consequences of removal or return.

The report is written in clear, non technical language and structured so that it can be understood by immigration judges, case workers, and legal professionals who are not medically trained.

Supporting Evidence

In addition to the medical report, it is often helpful to gather supporting evidence from other sources. We advise patients and their solicitors to obtain letters from their children’s schools confirming attendance, progress, and any additional educational needs; pharmacy records confirming ongoing prescriptions; hospital and specialist letters documenting current treatment; and any community or social support documentation.

This corroborating evidence strengthens the overall submission by showing consistency between the medical findings and the applicant’s lived circumstances.

Medication and Treatment

Where appropriate, we can prescribe medication as part of the clinical management plan. For patients with depression or anxiety, antidepressant medication such as sertraline may be commenced, with a private prescription provided and a follow up plan established. This also serves as evidence that the patient is actively receiving treatment in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an immigration medical report cost?
The cost depends on the complexity of the case and the number of sessions required. We provide a clear fee structure at the initial consultation so there are no surprises. Payment plans can be discussed for patients experiencing financial hardship.

How long does the report take to produce?
After the final assessment session, the report is typically completed within one to two weeks. Urgent reports can be arranged where there is a court deadline.

Can the report be used in court?
Yes. Our reports are prepared to medico legal standards and can be submitted as expert evidence in immigration tribunals and court proceedings.

Do I need a solicitor to request a report?
While most reports are commissioned by solicitors, individuals can also request an assessment directly. However, we recommend working with a legal representative who can advise on how the report fits into the broader case strategy.
