Travel Vaccinations London: Expert Advice Before You Fly

Planning a trip abroad is exciting, but the medical preparation is sometimes left to the last minute. A good travel vaccinations London service should take the stress out of this process, offering clear advice, the right jabs at the right time and a calm, organised experience. At Clinique Alpa in Palmers Green, our travel clinic is run by doctors who genuinely enjoy helping patients travel safely.

Travel medicine is more than ticking boxes. The right plan depends on where you are going, how long you will be there, what you will be doing, your age, your medical history and your personal risk tolerance. A 25 year old backpacking through Southeast Asia has very different needs from a 60 year old going on a 10 day cultural tour of Egypt. We tailor our advice accordingly.

A typical travel consultation lasts around 30 minutes. We will go through your itinerary in detail, check the latest country specific recommendations, review your vaccination history and discuss any medical conditions or medications that affect the plan. Where vaccines are needed, we can usually administer them during the same visit. Where antimalarials are required, we will explain the options and provide the prescription.

We stock a comprehensive range of travel vaccines including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, tick borne encephalitis, cholera, meningitis ACWY for Hajj and Umrah travellers, and combined vaccines where appropriate. Routine immunisations such as tetanus, polio, MMR and diphtheria can also be updated as part of the consultation.

Yellow fever certification is a common request. As an authorised yellow fever centre, we can issue the official international certificate of vaccination on the day. Some countries require this certificate for entry, so it is important to plan ahead, ideally 10 days or more before departure, as the certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.

Antimalarial advice is another core part of our travel clinic. The choice of medication depends on the destination, the duration of travel, your medical history and your personal preferences. We will explain the pros and cons of each option, including atovaquone proguanil, doxycycline and mefloquine, and help you decide which is most appropriate.

Beyond vaccines and tablets, we offer practical advice on a wide range of travel health topics. These include food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness, jet lag, sun protection, deep vein thrombosis on long flights, motion sickness, traveller’s diarrhoea management, sexual health on holiday and what to do if you become unwell abroad. We can also provide travel first aid kits and stand by medication for self treatment of common problems.

For families travelling with young children, we offer child friendly consultations and age appropriate vaccines. For pregnant travellers, we discuss the specific risks and precautions, including which vaccines are safe during pregnancy and which are best avoided. For older travellers, we review medications, hydration, mobility and the practical aspects of long journeys.

Timing matters in travel medicine. Ideally, book your appointment 6 to 8 weeks before departure, particularly if you need a course of vaccines such as rabies or hepatitis B. That said, we can still help if your trip is sooner, including last minute travellers leaving in just a few days. We will work out the best plan for the time available.

Some travellers need a fit to fly letter or a medication letter for customs. We can issue these during your consultation, on Clinique Alpa headed paper, signed by the doctor who saw you. We can also arrange any pre travel blood tests, ECG or other investigations that may be required by airlines or destination authorities.

Cost transparency is part of our promise. We publish the fees for individual vaccines and consultations, and we will give you a total before any vaccines are given. There are no hidden charges. For families, we offer practical advice on which vaccines are essential and which are optional, so that you can make informed decisions.
