Whether you are heading to sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, or anywhere else that requires specific health precautions, getting proper pre-travel health advice can make the difference between a safe trip and a medical emergency abroad. At Clinique Alpa in Palmers Green, we provide comprehensive travel health consultations for patients across North London.
What a Travel Health Consultation Covers
A pre-travel consultation with Dr Parmar will assess the specific health risks associated with your destination, the duration of your trip, the type of travel you are undertaking, and your own medical history. Based on this assessment, we will advise on required and recommended vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis if needed, food and water safety precautions, insect bite prevention strategies, altitude sickness prevention for high-altitude destinations, and any destination-specific health risks such as rabies exposure, dengue, or schistosomiasis.
Vaccinations Available
Clinique Alpa stocks and administers the most commonly required travel vaccinations, including hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever certification, tetanus and diphtheria boosters, meningitis ACWY, rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis, and Japanese encephalitis where indicated. Some vaccinations require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, so booking your consultation well in advance of your departure date is advisable — ideally six to eight weeks before travel.
From Our Clinic: When Things Go Wrong Abroad
We recently treated a child who had returned from a game drive in South Africa with what appeared to be insect bites on the arm. The family had not taken specific precautions for the trip, as the area was not considered malarial. Over several days, the bites evolved — developing a characteristic erythematous ring around one of the lesions, raising concern for a possible tick bite reaction.
We had seen the patient initially for an ear infection acquired during the trip, which resolved with antibiotics. But the expanding ring around the arm lesion required escalation — we provided a detailed referral letter to the Royal Free Hospital paediatric emergency department for urgent specialist review, ensuring the child was seen quickly by the right team.
This case illustrates two important points: first, that travel health risks extend beyond the obvious (malaria, typhoid) to include tick-borne diseases and other less commonly considered exposures. And second, that having an ongoing relationship with a GP who knows the patient’s history — and can spot when something is evolving — is invaluable.

Even if you are travelling within days and have not had any pre-travel preparation, it is still worth contacting us.
