Overview
Burning when passing urine, urgency or going more often can occur with a urinary tract infection. Similar symptoms can have other causes. Dark or strong-smelling urine on its own does not establish an infection.
The right assessment depends on your circumstances as well as the symptoms. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, diabetes, reduced immunity, a catheter or previous urinary problems. A new episode should not automatically be treated as identical to a previous one.
By telephone
Telephone discussion can help describe symptoms and decide whether a pharmacy, urine test, examination or urgent service is the appropriate next step. Mention fever, back or side pain, vomiting and visible blood early, because these can change the urgency.
If symptoms recur, have the dates of previous episodes and any test results available. Explain whether they fully settled between episodes and what happened after treatment. It is useful to distinguish a new illness from a problem that never resolved.
What cannot be done remotely
A phone call cannot test urine or examine for a kidney infection or another cause of pain. Some uncomplicated presentations can be assessed from history, while others need investigation. The decision depends on the whole clinical picture.
Ongoing symptoms need review rather than repeated assumptions. If genital symptoms or a possible sexual-health exposure are relevant, mention them privately. Advice should explain what to do if you deteriorate or the proposed plan does not help.
What to prepare
- Note onset, pain, urgency and changes in frequency.
- Mention blood, fever, back pain, vomiting or difficulty passing urine.
