Overview
Bladder problems can include leaking urine, a sudden need to go, getting up repeatedly at night or difficulty starting and emptying. These are different patterns, and several causes are possible. They should not simply be accepted as an inevitable part of ageing.
The impact matters as well as the symptom. Tell the doctor if you plan every outing around toilets, avoid exercise or lose sleep. You can describe the problem in ordinary words; embarrassment should not prevent a useful clinical conversation.
By telephone
A call may help clarify the pattern, review relevant history and consider which examination or test is appropriate. The doctor may ask about drinks, bowel habits, childbirth, pelvic surgery, prostate symptoms, medicines and previous attempts to manage the problem.
A brief bladder diary can show when urgency or leakage occurs and how it relates to everyday activity. If you already have one, discuss it rather than trying to remember every episode. Ask before making major changes to fluid intake or beginning a new training programme.
What cannot be done remotely
Telephone assessment cannot check whether the bladder empties properly or replace a necessary pelvic, abdominal or prostate examination. Urine testing and, sometimes, further investigation may be needed. Similar symptoms do not mean the same management is right for everyone.
A sudden inability to pass urine is different from a longstanding weak stream. Visible blood also needs attention even without pain. Explain what is new before discussing routine symptom management, and ask what changes should prompt earlier review.
What to prepare
- Describe leakage, urgency, frequency and difficulty emptying separately.
- Bring an existing diary of drinks and toilet visits if available.
- Mention pain, visible blood, recurrent infections or pelvic surgery.
- List medicines and any previous bladder or prostate assessments.
