Overview
Pelvic pain means discomfort around the lower abdomen. It can arise from the reproductive organs, bladder, bowel or surrounding tissues. Pain related to periods, sex, urination or bowel movements provides useful clues, but the location alone cannot identify its cause.
Repeated pain deserves attention even when it settles between episodes. Endometriosis is one possible explanation, particularly when symptoms follow a menstrual pattern, but it is not the only one. The effect on movement, intimacy, work and sleep is relevant to assessment.
By telephone
A telephone assessment starts with whether it is safe to continue the conversation or you need urgent help. Describe when the pain began, whether it is worsening and what you can still do. Mention pregnancy possibility, bleeding, discharge, fever and changes in bladder or bowel function early.
For ongoing symptoms, the discussion can draw together previous examinations, tests and advice. Explain whether the pain is cyclical, constant or triggered by particular activities. A short symptom record can help you describe a pattern without needing to recall every episode during the call.
What cannot be done remotely
A phone call cannot examine the abdomen or pelvis, take samples or perform a scan. Several urgent and non-urgent conditions can cause similar symptoms. The next appropriate step may therefore be an in-person assessment rather than a treatment decision during the call.
Normal previous investigations do not automatically explain a new or changed pain. Make clear what has changed since the last assessment. Where symptoms continue, ask what the follow-up plan is and which changes should prompt earlier help rather than another routine review.
