Overview
Difficulty starting to pass urine, a weaker stream, interrupted flow or waking to urinate can occur with an enlarged prostate. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms. Changes deserve assessment rather than being accepted as an inevitable part of getting older.
A PSA blood test provides information that must be interpreted in context. A raised result does not by itself diagnose prostate cancer, and a reassuring result cannot settle every concern. The benefits and possible consequences of testing are worth discussing before deciding on a test.
By telephone
A telephone consultation can review how urinary symptoms have developed and how they affect sleep and daily activities. Explain whether you feel the bladder empties, whether passing urine is painful and whether there has been visible blood. Mention recent infections and previous prostate care.
If your question concerns a PSA result, have the full report and earlier results available. The discussion can help distinguish a request for general screening information from follow-up of a specific finding. Ask what the proposed next step aims to clarify and who will review it.
What cannot be done remotely
A call cannot examine the prostate, check a urine sample or measure how well the bladder empties. Further assessment may involve physical examination, urine or blood tests and sometimes specialist investigations. The need for these depends on symptoms and the overall history.
A telephone review should not become a reason to repeat blood tests without understanding the plan. Some results lead to additional investigations that have their own uncertainties. Equally, worsening urinary symptoms need reassessment even if a previous test or examination was reassuring.
