Overview
PCOS is a familiar name for a condition affecting hormones, periods and other aspects of health. Current NHS information uses the name polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS, and explains that it was previously called PCOS. Older records may use the earlier name.
Possible concerns include infrequent periods, acne, unwanted hair growth, scalp hair thinning and difficulty conceiving. These symptoms have other possible causes too. Their presence alone does not confirm a diagnosis, and different people with the condition can have quite different priorities.
By telephone
A telephone consultation can review the pattern of symptoms and the evidence behind a previous diagnosis. Tell the doctor which features affect you most, what investigations have already taken place and whether your main question concerns periods, fertility, skin, hair or longer-term health.
The conversation can help organise the next step when information is incomplete or different clinicians have used different terminology. It is useful to discuss the emotional effect as well as physical symptoms. An existing label should not prevent assessment of a new symptom on its own merits.
What cannot be done remotely
Assessment may require blood tests, an examination or an ultrasound, depending on the circumstances. A telephone conversation cannot measure hormone levels or confirm the diagnosis from symptoms alone. Having cysts mentioned on a scan is not a complete explanation of the condition.
Care may involve several priorities, including menstrual health, fertility and metabolic risk. These should be considered individually rather than assuming that everyone needs the same plan. Sudden pain or acute illness should not be attributed to a longstanding hormonal diagnosis without assessment.
What to prepare
- Have previous hormone results, scan reports or clinic letters available.
- Describe your period pattern and any recent change.
- List current medicines and previous treatment experiences.
- Explain any pregnancy plans and the symptoms you most want to address.
