Overview
Diabetes affects how the body controls blood glucose. Different types require different care. Increased thirst, frequent urination, tiredness or unexplained weight loss can be reasons to seek assessment, but a symptom description cannot confirm a diagnosis.
If you already have diabetes, it helps to separate a question about long-term care from a current episode of feeling unwell. The second may need urgent advice from your diabetes team rather than waiting for a general review.
By telephone
A planned conversation may help explain recent reports, discuss difficulties with an agreed plan and identify questions for your usual team. Bring the record of what has actually happened, including symptoms or missed treatment, rather than only the most recent reading.
Talk about eating, activity, work, emotional strain and practical problems with monitoring. These can affect how manageable a care plan feels. Ask which clinician is responsible for the next review and whether any outstanding checks need arranging separately.
What cannot be done remotely
A telephone consultation cannot perform the blood tests used in diagnosis or replace necessary eye, foot and physical checks. Treatment adjustments may need verified results, records and ongoing monitoring. Do not change an established regimen based on general website information.
If you become ill, follow your personal sick-day instructions and contact your diabetes team when you are unsure what to do. Symptoms of a diabetic emergency can appear before someone knows they have diabetes; a prior diagnosis is not required to seek emergency help.
