Liver results and gallbladder questions

Understand an existing result or diagnosis and recognise symptoms that need urgent examination.

Remote suitability: limited. An examination or face to face care may be needed.

Overview

A liver blood-test result, a scan showing fatty change and a diagnosis of gallstones describe different findings. None should be interpreted from a label alone. The reason for the investigation, the full report and your symptoms help guide the next step.

Gallstones may be found without symptoms, while a stone blocking a duct can cause significant pain or other complications. Upper abdominal discomfort has other possible causes too. An earlier scan finding does not automatically explain a new episode.

By telephone

For a stable concern, a call may help review the report and clarify what follow-up was advised. Discuss previous tests, existing conditions, alcohol intake and all medicines or supplements. Accurate information helps the assessment; the purpose is to understand your health rather than assign blame.

Describe any pain, its location and relation to meals, along with appetite, itching or changes in urine and stool colour. If you have been referred for further care, ask what the next investigation is intended to answer and whom to contact if symptoms change.

What cannot be done remotely

A telephone call cannot examine the abdomen or establish the cause of abnormal liver tests. Further blood tests, imaging or specialist review may be needed. Advice depends on the finding and its context, not simply on whether a laboratory has flagged the result.

New jaundice or severe pain should not wait for a routine results discussion. Avoid starting products marketed as liver cleanses or stopping prescribed treatment without advice. Bring the actual ingredients of any supplements into the conversation.

What to prepare

  • Have complete blood-test and scan reports, including dates.
  • Describe pain, fever, itching or colour changes in eyes, skin, urine and stool.
  • List medicines, supplements and alcohol intake accurately.
  • Bring referral letters and outstanding follow-up instructions.
