Overview
A blocked feeling, discomfort or reduced hearing can have several causes, including wax and problems in different parts of the ear. The same description can therefore lead to different assessments. It is important not to assume that a new hearing change is simply wax.
Hearing loss may develop gradually or suddenly. A sudden loss or rapid deterioration needs urgent advice, even if there is little pain. Ear discharge, swelling, dizziness and feeling unwell also change the urgency and should be mentioned when you first seek help.
By telephone
A telephone conversation can clarify when symptoms began, whether one or both ears are affected and whether hearing changed abruptly. Describe pain, discharge, dizziness and any recent illness or injury. Mention previous ear operations, hearing devices and conditions that affect immunity.
For an ongoing concern, the discussion can review a previous examination or hearing assessment and explain the questions that remain. If hearing makes a phone call difficult, identify that communication need when arranging care and discuss a suitable alternative with the service. Do not struggle through an assessment you cannot hear clearly.
What cannot be done remotely
A phone call cannot inspect the ear canal or eardrum, distinguish reliably between different infections or perform a formal hearing test. Examination with an ear instrument may be needed before a cause and suitable treatment are clear. Some symptoms require specialist assessment.
Do not insert objects into the ear in an attempt to investigate or remove a blockage. A previous episode that improved with one treatment does not establish the cause of a new problem. Gradual hearing difficulties also deserve review because they can affect communication and daily safety.
What to prepare
- Note whether hearing changed suddenly, gradually or after an illness.
- Describe pain, discharge, dizziness and swelling around the ear.
- Mention ear procedures, hearing devices and previous assessment results.
- Explain any difficulty hearing the call itself before the consultation.
