Overview
A cough often accompanies a cold, but coughs have several possible causes. The course of the illness, breathing symptoms and your usual health help determine whether self-care advice is enough or whether an examination is needed.
Describe the illness in order: what began first, whether there was any improvement and what made you seek advice now. An illness that is slowly settling raises different questions from one that is worsening or has changed after an initial recovery.
By telephone
A telephone assessment can help discuss the history, check for warning signs and consider the right setting for further care. Tell the doctor about sleep, eating and drinking, activity, fever and any change in breathing. Mention long-term heart or lung conditions and reduced immunity early in the conversation.
It is also useful to explain what you have tried and what you expected it to do. Ask about practical self-care, how to reduce spread and what changes should prompt another assessment. Advice depends on the whole picture, not simply on whether a cough sounds chesty.
What cannot be done remotely
The clinician cannot listen to your lungs or obtain observations through an ordinary phone call. A chest examination, tests or imaging may be needed if symptoms persist or suggest another cause. Remote assessment cannot exclude pneumonia in every situation.
Do not keep postponing review because a cold originally seemed to explain the cough. Persistent symptoms, unexplained weight loss or coughing blood need medical attention. A medicine request does not establish which treatment is appropriate.
What to prepare
- Write a short timeline, including any apparent recovery followed by worsening.
- Mention breathlessness, chest pain, fever or blood when coughing.
- List underlying conditions, current medicines and recent respiratory advice.
- Explain whether you can manage usual activities, food and fluids.
