Overview
Back or neck pain can follow an awkward movement, a period in one position or an injury, but the cause is not always obvious. Pain can disturb sleep, driving and work even when it is not caused by a serious condition. The pattern and associated symptoms help determine what assessment is appropriate.
Explain whether pain stays in the back or neck or travels into a limb. Weakness, altered sensation, fever or changes in bladder or bowel function are important additional details. Do not assume that familiar pain means every new episode has the same cause, particularly if the symptoms or circumstances have changed.
By telephone
A telephone discussion can explore onset, any injury, positions that affect pain and what you can currently do. Describe walking, sleep, lifting, dressing and work tasks rather than focusing only on how intense the pain feels. Previous episodes, existing conditions and any examination already performed can provide useful context.
You can ask about the appropriate next assessment and general ways to remain active within your capabilities. Explain if fear of movement, recurrent flares or work demands are making recovery harder. If neck movement is restricted, say whether this affects tasks that require looking around safely, including driving.
What cannot be done remotely
Telephone contact cannot assess strength, sensation, reflexes or the spine directly. An in-person examination may be needed, and advice about specific exercises must take account of the cause and your condition. A discussion cannot establish that a nerve is compressed or that imaging is required.
Urgent symptoms take priority over a routine appointment. New nerve symptoms, a serious injury or signs of illness may need prompt physical assessment. If advice has already been given but the pattern changes, seek reassessment rather than continuing a plan simply because it helped a previous episode.
