Getting a second opinion.

An unhurried, independent review of your diagnosis, test results or treatment plan with a private GP. We go through your records carefully, answer your questions plainly, and give you an honest view — whether that is reassurance about the plan you already have, or a different way forward. A 30 minute in-clinic consultation is £100.

What it is

A fresh pair of expert eyes.

A second opinion is an independent clinical review of a diagnosis, a set of results or a proposed treatment, carried out by a doctor who was not involved in the original decision. It is not about doubting anyone — it is about making sure a decision that matters to you rests on the fullest possible picture.

The consultation is unhurried. We take a careful history, read the letters and results you share with us, and talk everything through in plain language. You leave with a written summary and agreed next steps — and, with your consent, we send a short summary to your NHS GP so your records stay joined up.

Is it right for you

Who this is for.

Anyone weighing up a diagnosis, a set of results, a proposed treatment, or a recommendation for surgery or another procedure. Some people want their options explained again with more time; others simply want confident reassurance before they commit. Children can be seen too, where clinically suitable, with a parent or guardian present.

Second opinions take place at our Palmers Green clinic, with time to go through your records properly — and where the question needs an examination, the GP can examine you as part of the consultation. This is private healthcare and it sits alongside your NHS care. It does not replace your NHS GP.

When it helps

Common reasons people ask for a second opinion.

Every review begins with assessment. We recommend and write only what the clinical picture supports.

01

A new diagnosis

You have been given a diagnosis and want an independent review before you decide what happens next.

02

Test and scan results

Blood tests, scans or other reports you would like explained plainly, with time for your questions.

03

A treatment plan

A treatment plan you are unsure about, reviewed carefully with the options talked through.

04

Surgery or a procedure ahead

An operation or procedure has been recommended and you want to understand the reasoning and the alternatives.

05

Symptoms that persist

Symptoms that have not settled, or an answer that does not feel complete — a fresh pair of eyes on the whole picture.

06

Peace of mind

Sometimes the most valuable outcome is confident reassurance that the plan you already have is the right one.

How it works

From booking to a written summary.

Four simple steps, with time to think at every one of them.

Book a second opinion
  1. 01

    Book and pay

Book a time that suits you and pay securely. Your slot is confirmed by email.

  2. 02

    Gather your records

Clinic letters, test results, scan reports and a list of your current medicines all help. Upload or send anything relevant in advance if you can.

  3. 03

    Have your unhurried review

The GP takes a careful history, goes through your records with you, and gives an honest, independent view.

  4. 04

    Get a written summary

You leave with a clear written summary and agreed next steps. Referral letters or reports follow where clinically appropriate after assessment.

Honest limits

What a second opinion is not.

A second opinion is an independent view, not a guaranteed different answer. If we think the plan you already have is right, we will say so — that is often the most useful outcome. Any referral letters or reports are issued only where clinically appropriate after assessment.

Some questions need a hands on examination rather than a records review. In clinic the GP can examine you as part of the consultation, and our home visiting service is available for those who cannot travel. Clinique Alpa provides private healthcare and is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It does not replace your registered NHS GP. If you are unsure which route is right, contact the clinic and we will point you the right way.

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

How much does a second opinion cost?

A 30 minute GP consultation and examination in clinic is £100. Payment is taken securely when you book, and full pricing is on our appointments and fees page.

Do I need my medical records?

They help a great deal. Clinic letters, discharge summaries, test results, scan reports and a list of your current medicines let the GP review the whole picture. Send or upload anything relevant in advance if you can — but if you do not have everything, book anyway and we will work with what you have.

Is asking for a second opinion disloyal to my own doctor?

No. Seeking a second opinion is a normal, sensible part of making a big medical decision, and good clinicians expect it. Our role is not to criticise anyone — it is to review the evidence independently and tell you honestly what we think.

Will you tell my NHS GP?

Only with your consent. If you agree, we send a short summary to your NHS GP so your records stay joined up. We share nothing without your consent, unless the law or patient safety requires it.

What if I need a specialist?

If specialist input is the right next step, we will say so and can write a referral letter to a private consultant, where clinically appropriate after assessment. Read more about our specialist services and medical reports.

Can my child have a second opinion?

Yes, where clinically suitable, with a parent or guardian present throughout the consultation. If the GP feels your child needs to be examined in person, we will say so and direct you to the right service.

Is a second opinion right for an emergency?

No. If you have severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke, or heavy bleeding, call 999 now. For urgent advice that cannot wait for an appointment, contact NHS 111. A second opinion is for considered decisions, not emergencies.
