Overview

Travel health depends on more than the name of a country. Plans, activities, accommodation, time away and existing health needs can all affect the questions to discuss. A conversation before departure can help identify the appropriate travel-health service and avoid leaving important arrangements until the last moment.

Vaccination advice is only one part of preparation. You may also need to ask about ongoing treatment, access to care while away, documents or managing a health condition during a journey. Fear of flying has its own dedicated consultation guide.

By telephone

By telephone, you can explain the itinerary and relevant health history, check which vaccination records you have and identify what needs specialist travel advice. Current destination guidance should be checked because recommendations can change.

Ask what preparation needs to happen in person and which arrangements remain outstanding. If departure is soon, be clear about this: a conversation does not mean all necessary protection, assessment or documentation can be completed in time.

What cannot be done remotely

Vaccines cannot be given by telephone. Some travel requirements involve specific services, certificates or authorised centres. Recommendations and the suitability of any vaccine depend on individual assessment; this page does not offer a vaccination package or confirm availability.

If you feel unwell during or after travel, tell the assessing clinician about the travel and symptoms. A routine pre-travel advice appointment is not the right route for an acute illness that may need prompt investigation.
