Overview
Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory condition that can produce scaly, itchy or sore areas of skin. Its appearance varies across skin tones and body areas, and the nails may also change. The amount of visible skin involved does not fully describe its effect on daily life.
Some people with psoriasis develop joint inflammation. Recurring stiffness, swelling, painful joints or swollen fingers and toes should be mentioned even if the skin symptoms seem manageable. These symptoms need assessment and should not simply be treated as an expected inconvenience of a skin condition.
By telephone
A telephone review can discuss a known diagnosis, the course of recent flares and difficulties with the existing care plan. Describe affected areas, discomfort, disrupted sleep and any effect on movement or confidence. Explain whether the current episode resembles earlier ones or feels different.
The conversation can also help organise questions for a skin or joint specialist. Have treatment instructions and monitoring arrangements available, including anything you have found hard to follow. Mention joint symptoms explicitly rather than assuming they will be covered in a discussion focused on the skin.
What cannot be done remotely
A new scaly rash cannot be confirmed as psoriasis by telephone. Examination may be needed to distinguish it from other skin conditions. A clinician also cannot assess joint swelling or movement fully through a call; blood tests or imaging may be relevant after assessment.
Some psoriasis treatments require ongoing specialist review and monitoring. Do not make unsupervised changes to that plan because symptoms have improved or worsened. A rapid, widespread deterioration with illness is different from an ordinary flare and needs urgent in-person care.
