Respite

Respite live in care

Short term live in care so that a family carer can rest, travel or recover, while the person they care for stays at home with support.

Respite at home rather than a respite bed

Many families only consider a respite bed in a care home. For some people that works. For others, a fortnight away from their own rooms is unsettling, and they come back worse. Short term live in care keeps the person at home, with their own routine and their own things, while you have a break that is a proper break.

We arrange respite for a week, several weeks, or around a specific event such as an operation or a family wedding. The carer is matched as carefully as for long term care, and you meet them before you go.

When families arrange respite

  • You have not had an unbroken night in months
  • You need to go into hospital yourself
  • A holiday, a wedding, or time with your own children
  • A trial of live in care before committing to a longer arrangement

Talk to us

A free 15 to 20 minute conversation with a manager, by telephone or video, about the person, the home and what has become difficult. We will tell you whether live in care is likely to suit, roughly what it costs, and whether we can provide it. There is no obligation, and no doctor travel at this stage.

Doctor led assessment

Once you are ready to go ahead, a doctor from our team assesses the person, by video where clinically appropriate or at home, and we write the care plan with you. The assessment is charged separately. If you start a long term live in care package, the fee is credited against the first month.

Meet your carer

We introduce the carer we have matched to the person and the household. Care begins on an agreed date, with a manager available throughout.

Questions about respite care

How short can respite be?

A week or more usually gives the person and the carer a fair start. A few days is sometimes possible. Tell us the dates and we will tell you what we can do.

How are carers checked?

Enhanced DBS check, references taken up, right to work and identity checks, training and a competency assessment before they work alone, and unannounced spot checks once care is under way. Carers are supervised by the management team for as long as they work with us.

How much does live in care cost?

Live in care with Clinique Alpa starts from £1,650 per week for one person, subject to assessment and level of need. The fee rises with the level of support, broken nights, care for a couple, and complex or specialist needs. We give you a written quote after the assessment.

Who pays for live in care?

Families fund their care privately. Many use a combination of savings, pensions, property income and Attendance Allowance, which is not means tested. NHS Continuing Healthcare can fund care at home for people whose eligibility is confirmed by the NHS. We do not hold local authority or NHS contracts.
