Emergency live in care

A fall, a hospital discharge, a family carer who is suddenly unwell. If something has to change this week, call us and we will tell you what we can do today.

How quickly can live in care start?

Sometimes within a few days, sometimes a week or two. The start date depends on the assessment and on finding a carer who is right for the person, not just available. We will tell you on the first call what we think is realistic, so that you can also speak to others if we cannot meet your date.

If you are standing in a hospital corridor, call us. If you are waiting for a discharge that might happen tomorrow, call us. We prioritise urgent calls and can often assess quickly.

What helps us move faster

You do not need a complete file. It helps to have:

  • The postcode of the home and whether there is a spare bedroom
  • A rough picture of mobility, memory and medication
  • The hospital discharge date, even if it keeps moving
  • Whether nights are already unsettled
  • Who holds power of attorney, if decisions need to be made
  • Pets, stairs, parking, and who else lives in the house

Most of all, be reachable on the number you give us.

The same careful process, at speed

Talk to us

A free 15 to 20 minute conversation with a manager, by telephone or video, about the person, the home and what has become difficult. We will tell you whether live in care is likely to suit, roughly what it costs, and whether we can provide it. There is no obligation, and no doctor travel at this stage.

Doctor led assessment

Once you are ready to go ahead, a doctor from our team assesses the person, by video where clinically appropriate or at home, and we write the care plan with you. The assessment is charged separately. If you start a long term live in care package, the fee is credited against the first month.

Meet your carer

We introduce the carer we have matched to the person and the household. Care begins on an agreed date, with a manager available throughout.

Questions about care at short notice

How quickly can care start?

Sometimes within a few days, sometimes a week or two. It depends on the assessment and on finding a carer who is right for the person. If you are facing a hospital discharge, call us today and we will tell you what is realistic.

Can someone come home from hospital with a live in carer?

Often, yes. We work with the discharge team where we can and assess before the person leaves hospital. Nursing tasks the ward needs to arrange remain with the NHS.

Does a live in carer stay awake all night?

No. A live in carer works through the day, takes a daily break, and sleeps in the home at night. They are there if the person calls out or needs help occasionally. If someone needs frequent help through the night, we will say so at assessment and talk about waking night cover or a second carer.

Is this a nursing service?

No. Clinique Alpa is registered for personal care. Nursing tasks such as clinical procedures, syringe drivers, catheter changes and wound care stay with district nurses, the GP or specialist teams. We work alongside them.
