24 hour care at home

24 hour care at home

When someone cannot safely be left alone, live in care means there is a carer in the house day and night. Here is what that covers, and what it does not.

What 24 hour care at home means

Families usually search for 24 hour care when evenings have become frightening or a parent cannot be left overnight. Live in care answers that need. A carer lives in the home, supports the person actively through the day, and sleeps in the house at night, so someone is there if there is a fall or confusion at 2am.

It does not mean one carer is awake and working for 24 hours. Nobody can do that safely. If the person needs frequent help during the night, we will say so at assessment and arrange waking night cover or a second carer, so that the day carer can rest and the package does not fail.

Why families choose this over a care home

  • Someone in the house through the night, in the person's own bedroom
  • Mornings that can start slowly, in the person's own time
  • No move, no shared corridor, no new address to learn
  • Family who live far away can sleep too

What we will ask you about nights

How often does the person wake? Do they get up and walk around? Is there a history of falls? What happens with medication at night? The answers let us match the right carer and the right pattern of cover. If live in care alone is not enough, we will tell you and explain the options.

How 24 hour care at home is arranged

Talk to us

A free 15 to 20 minute conversation with a manager, by telephone or video, about the person, the home and what has become difficult. We will tell you whether live in care is likely to suit, roughly what it costs, and whether we can provide it. There is no obligation, and no doctor travel at this stage.

Doctor led assessment

Once you are ready to go ahead, a doctor from our team assesses the person, by video where clinically appropriate or at home, and we write the care plan with you. The assessment is charged separately. If you start a long term live in care package, the fee is credited against the first month.

Meet your carer

We introduce the carer we have matched to the person and the household. Care begins on an agreed date, with a manager available throughout.

Questions about 24 hour care

Does a live in carer stay awake all night?

No. A live in carer works through the day, takes a daily break, and sleeps in the home at night. They are there if the person calls out or needs help occasionally. If someone needs frequent help through the night, we will say so at assessment and talk about waking night cover or a second carer.

What room does a live in carer need?

A private bedroom with a bed and somewhere to store clothes, use of a bathroom, and access to the kitchen. Wi-Fi is appreciated. The household provides the carer's food.

Is this a nursing service?

No. Clinique Alpa is registered for personal care. Nursing tasks such as clinical procedures, syringe drivers, catheter changes and wound care stay with district nurses, the GP or specialist teams. We work alongside them.

Can someone come home from hospital with a live in carer?

Often, yes. We work with the discharge team where we can and assess before the person leaves hospital. Nursing tasks the ward needs to arrange remain with the NHS.

How much does live in care cost?

Live in care with Clinique Alpa starts from £1,650 per week for one person, subject to assessment and level of need. The fee rises with the level of support, broken nights, care for a couple, and complex or specialist needs. We give you a written quote after the assessment.
