Private GP Home Visits in Central London: How It Works and What It Costs

If you need a doctor to come to you in central London, here is the short answer: a GMC-registered GP from Clinique Alpa can visit your home, hotel or office, the visit lasts up to an hour, and the price is published before you book. A daytime private GP home visit is £250 and a night visit is £450. There is no membership to join and no fee that only appears when you ring up.

That last point matters more than it should. In the London visiting doctor market, the usual practice is to quote the visit fee by telephone. We think you should know what a doctor costs before you are unwell at midnight, so our prices sit on our fees page in plain sight.

A home visit is for urgent but non-emergency problems. Chest pain, signs of a stroke, severe breathlessness, heavy bleeding, a severe allergic reaction or symptoms of sepsis need 999 or A&E, immediately, not a home visit.

What a private GP home visit actually involves

A home visit from us is not a brief look and a prescription pad. It is a full consultation, the same medicine we practise at our clinic, brought to your door. The visit includes a proper history, a thorough examination with the equipment a GP needs, a clear explanation of what we think is going on, and a written plan. Where it is clinically appropriate the doctor can prescribe, arrange blood tests on the spot, organise a specialist referral, or write the letters and documentation you need.

The standard visit is up to 60 minutes. That is deliberate. Most medical problems that justify a doctor travelling to you also justify the doctor sitting down, listening properly and examining carefully. Our strapline is compassionate listening, thorough care, better health, and it was written about exactly this kind of medicine.

Published prices

These are the visiting prices from our appointments and fees page, as they apply today:

Service Hours Price
Home visit (up to 60 minutes) 8am to 9pm £250
Extended home visit (up to 120 minutes) 8am to 9pm £480
Home visit (up to 60 minutes) 9pm to 7am £450
Extended home visit (up to 120 minutes) 9pm to 7am £750

Common additions are also published rather than discovered later: blood sample collection is a £20 draw fee plus the price of the specific test, a referral letter is £50, and a formal medical report starts from £120. If something is not listed on the fees page we will tell you the cost before the doctor sets out, not after.

How booking works

Call 020 8882 8088 and tell us what is happening. A clinician decides with you whether a visit is the right call, because sometimes it is not: some problems are safely handled by a £65 virtual consultation first, and some need an ambulance, in which case we will say so plainly. If a visit is right, we agree a time window and give you an honest estimate of when the doctor will arrive. Same-day visits are usually possible, subject to availability, and we would rather tell you a realistic time than a flattering one.

After the visit you receive the documentation that was agreed, and an itemised invoice the same day. If you are claiming through travel or private health insurance, the invoice includes the detail insurers ask for. Our guide to hotel visits for London guests covers this in more depth.

Where we visit

Our clinic is at 466 Green Lanes, Palmers Green, and our visiting service covers central London as well as our home ground in the north of the city: Mayfair, Marylebone, Knightsbridge, Belgravia, Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster, Victoria, Soho, Covent Garden, Bloomsbury, the City of London and the surrounding postcodes, alongside Islington, Camden, Hampstead and the whole of North London. We plan central visits around real travel times and we are straight with you about them when you call.

Who a home visit suits

The people who call us tend to be too unwell to sit in a waiting room, caring for someone who cannot easily travel, working to a diary that will not release them, or staying in a hotel without a local GP. Infections, flare-ups of long-term conditions, urinary symptoms, chest and breathing problems that are not severe, gastric illness, pain that needs proper assessment, wounds that need review: these are home-visit medicine. A frail parent who has gone off their legs is home-visit medicine too, and often the most valuable visit we do. We have written separately about arranging a GP home visit for an elderly parent.

Why we work this way

Clinique Alpa is an independent clinic led by its own doctors, and the GP who visits you is accountable to the clinic’s name, not a rota agency. We publish prices because we would want them published if we were the patient. We allow up to an hour because medicine done properly takes time. And we ask you to read our Google reviews, 175 of them with a 5.0 rating at the time of writing, because the experience of previous patients is better evidence than anything we could write about ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

Can the doctor prescribe during a home visit?

Yes, where it is clinically appropriate. The doctor prescribes on examination findings and clinical judgement, exactly as at the clinic, so no specific medicine can be promised before assessment.

How quickly can a doctor reach me in central London?

Often the same day, and at night the answer is usually tonight. It depends on demand and travel time, so we give you a realistic arrival estimate when you call rather than a standard claim. Subject to availability.

Do I need to be a member?

No. There is no membership, no joining fee and no different price list for newcomers. Everyone pays the published price.

Can you visit me in a hotel or office?

Yes. Hotel and workplace visits run exactly like home visits, discreetly, and the invoice is suitable for travel insurance claims.

What if it turns out to be an emergency?

If your symptoms suggest an emergency when you call, we will tell you to call 999 or go to A&E rather than book a visit. If a doctor at a visit finds something that needs hospital care, we arrange it there and then.

Need a doctor to come to you today? Call 020 8882 8088. Day visits £250, night visits £450, published in full on our fees page. Subject to availability.
