Overview
Food allergy and food intolerance are different, although both can prompt concern after eating. Allergy can involve the skin, digestion, breathing or circulation. Intolerance more often causes digestive symptoms and is not the same immune reaction. Symptoms alone may still need careful assessment.
The sequence of an episode matters: what was eaten, how symptoms developed and whether a similar reaction has happened before. Do not deliberately eat a suspected trigger to prove a reaction. A severe reaction needs emergency care rather than a planned discussion about testing.
By telephone
A telephone consultation can review the pattern, previous assessments and any existing allergy plan. Explain which foods or ingredients were involved and whether symptoms included swelling, breathing difficulty or faintness. Distinguish symptoms you experienced from a diagnosis previously confirmed by a clinician.
The discussion can help identify whether allergy assessment, dietary advice or investigation of another digestive problem is appropriate. A simple food and symptom diary may support the history. Bring questions about avoiding foods safely, especially if restrictions are becoming broad or difficult to manage.
What cannot be done remotely
A phone call cannot perform allergy tests or a supervised food challenge. Test selection and interpretation depend on the history; a result by itself does not explain every symptom. Commercial home intolerance tests are not a reliable basis for removing whole food groups.
Unnecessary restriction can make a balanced diet difficult. Seek appropriate professional advice rather than progressively excluding foods without a plan. If you already have a prescribed emergency allergy plan, continue following it and discuss any practical difficulty using it with the responsible clinician.
What to prepare
- Describe the food, symptom sequence and whether the episode recurred.
- Have previous allergy results and an existing emergency plan available.
- List foods avoided and any effect on eating or nutrition.
- Mention asthma and any previous severe reaction.
